The world’s famous leader state has implemented state-sanctioned haircuts for men and women. Women are allowed to choose one of the styles; married women are instructed to keep their tresses short, while the single ladies are allowed let loose with longer, curlier locks.

Men are prohibited from growing their hair longer than 5 cm — less than 2 inches — while older men can get away with up to 7 cm (3 inches).

Surprisingly, none of the male hair styles match the famous leader’s trademark haircut.

Mika Mäkeläinen, a Finnish journalist shared a picture of a poster on social media. He he took the picture during his visit to Pyongyang to cover the Day of the Sun – a celebration of 105 years since the nation’s founder Kim Il-sung was born.

He even tried to have a haircut at one of the country’s salons, choosing what he said was ‘the most popular’ style on offer – and described the experience as the ‘best shave and head massage that I have ever had’.

He tweeted: ‘North Korean men can choose between 15 approved haircut styles. I had the most popular one – and it’s not like Kim Jong Un.’

‘Equality in North Korea: Both sexes have 15 approved haircut models. You can forget about dyeing your hair though.’

But hair conformity is not a big deal in North Korea. There are a couple theories as to why this mandate is in place, including that Kim is not a fan of previous styles. Perhaps he views this as a way to implement order. What do you think?
